Identify the material
Clean and remove oils

Mask no-paint and safety areas
Prep by Substrate
Finished or Smooth Leather
Clean gently, never soak, test first. Use only compatible prep. Avoid over-sanding or high-wear palm/grip areas.
Synthetic Leather, Vinyl, and PU
Remove dirt, oil, silicone, and protectants. Avoid harsh solvents. Use only light prep when manufacturer and Gear Ink directions allow it.
Molded Plastic Shells
Wash and degrease. Identify the plastic/coating, test adhesion. Lightly scuff only when compatible. Do not cover labels, vents, cracks, or safety markings.
Rubber and TPU Flexible Parts
Clean thoroughly and test flex. Avoid soles, studs, heavy-friction areas, and structural parts.
Mesh, Fabric, and Coated Textiles
Many are not paint-ready. Test first, use controlled light application only if compatible, and keep vents and breathable areas clear.
Cleat Uppers — Identify each upper material; mask laces, outsole, studs, and heavy-flex or high-friction zones.
Always prioritize safe, compatible prep for specialized equipment.
